Police in Bandar Seri Alam made a shocking discovery on Wednesday after stopping a Perodua Myvi near the forest edge—inside the vehicle was a tightly sealed container, riddled with small holes, holding a live Malayan sun bear.
The operation was carried out at 12.35pm by the Federal Reserve Unit (PSP) of Bukit Aman together with Johor’s Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan). The 22-year-old local driver was immediately arrested.
According to PSP Commander SAC Rosli Yusof, the suspect failed to produce any license or written approval to keep or transport the protected animal. “The seizure, valued at RM70,057—including the vehicle, personal belongings, and the sun bear—shows PDRM’s firm commitment in tackling illegal wildlife activities,” he said.
The Malayan sun bear is a fully protected species under Malaysian law. Authorities believe continued vigilance is crucial to combat the illegal wildlife trade. “Close cooperation between PDRM and Perhilitan proves the effectiveness of joint operations in safeguarding our natural heritage,” Rosli added.
He urged the public to come forward with information on any suspected wildlife trafficking or unlicensed ownership. “We must act now so that future generations do not lose this precious treasure of nature,” he stressed.
The case is being investigated under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 (Act 716).
