At least 12 people were killed after a bus from Poland crashed in eastern Hungary, with several other passengers also reported to have been injured, according to local police.
The accident happened on the M3 motorway near Mezőkeresztes in Miskolc district, around 140 kilometres east of Budapest.
Police said the bus veered off the motorway before plunging into a ditch, resulting in multiple casualties.
Initial investigations indicated that the driver may have fallen asleep while behind the wheel, causing the vehicle to lose control and leave the highway.
The driver was subsequently detained by authorities as investigations into the deadly crash continued.
Several injured passengers were also reported following the accident, although further details on their conditions were not immediately available.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers of driver fatigue, particularly during long-distance journeys where a momentary lapse in concentration can have devastating consequences.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the crash and determine whether any further action should be taken.
