Morocco Beat Netherlands On Penalties To Reach World Cup Last 16

Date:

Morocco booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after defeating the Netherlands 3-2 in a dramatic penalty shootout on Monday following a 1-1 draw in regulation and extra time.

According to the German Press Agency (dpa), Ismael Saibari converted the decisive penalty, calmly sending the ball into the bottom-left corner as Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen dived the wrong way.

The victory sends Morocco into the Round of 16, where they will face co-hosts Canada in Houston on Saturday for a place in the quarter-finals.

The Netherlands looked to be on course for victory after Cody Gakpo scored a deeply emotional opening goal in the 72nd minute, just days after he and his partner, Noa van der Bij, announced the loss of their unborn child.

Despite the personal tragedy, Gakpo chose to remain with the Dutch squad for the tournament and broke the deadlock with a composed finish.

The move began when goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen launched a long ball towards Wout Weghorst, who headed it into the path of Crysencio Summerville.

Summerville surged forward before being brought down between two Moroccan defenders, but managed to slip the ball through to Gakpo, who fired home to give the Netherlands the lead.

The goal appeared set to secure Dutch progression, but Morocco produced a dramatic late equaliser in the opening minute of stoppage time.

Chemsdine Talbi delivered a cross from the left, and Issa Diop rose above the defence to head past Verbruggen while Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk could only watch as the ball found the back of the net.

Neither side was able to find a winner in extra time, sending the match to a penalty shootout where Morocco held their nerve to claim a memorable victory and advance to the knockout stage.
