A senior officer from an enforcement agency has been remanded for three days after allegedly demanding a RM50,000 bribe in exchange for taking no action against a company found to be operating unregistered vehicles.
The remand order, which runs until 2 July, was issued by Magistrate Cynthia Noor Haizean Sulaiman following an application by the Selangor branch of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) at the Shah Alam Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
According to a source, the male suspect, believed to be in his 30s, was arrested at around 5pm on Monday in the Klang Valley. Preliminary investigations revealed that the alleged offence took place on 23 June, when the officer was said to have demanded RM50,000 to close the case involving the company.
However, the source said the suspect later agreed to accept RM15,000 in cash after the company requested that the amount be reduced from the original sum. The alleged arrangement is now being investigated by anti-graft authorities.
The case has once again placed the spotlight on corruption involving enforcement personnel, with authorities continuing efforts to strengthen integrity within public institutions and crack down on abuse of power.
Meanwhile, Selangor MACC director Mohd Azwan Ramli confirmed the arrest when contacted. The case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.
