A prisoner died after he was allegedly assaulted by three fellow inmates at Marang Prison on Monday.
Marang district police chief Superintendent Sofian Redzuan said the district police headquarters received a report about the incident from a prison warden at around 12.31pm.
He said the incident involved the 38-year-old victim and three male suspects aged between 21 and 35, all of whom were from Terengganu.
“Preliminary investigations found that the victim was assaulted by other inmates inside the room before he was taken to Merchang Health Clinic for initial treatment.
“However, the medical officer on duty confirmed that the victim had died upon arrival at the clinic,” he said when contacted on Tuesday.
Sofian said the victim’s body was subsequently sent to Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Kuala Terengganu for a post-mortem examination.
The post-mortem found that the prisoner died from a ruptured spleen caused by blunt-force trauma. Police believe the injuries may have been inflicted through punches or kicks during the alleged assault.
Following the findings, police arrested three male inmates identified as the suspects believed to have attacked and assaulted the victim.
Sofian said preliminary investigations indicated that the incident was allegedly triggered by an old debt and the suspects’ dissatisfaction with the victim.
The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, while police continue their investigations to ensure the suspects are brought to justice.
