Hiker Found Safe After Three Days Trapped In Gunung Jerai Ravine

Date:

A 34-year-old man who was reported missing after allegedly falling into a ravine while hiking at Gunung Jerai, Kedah, on Sunday has been found safe after being trapped in a steep area for nearly three days.

The victim was discovered in a stable condition about 20 metres from the cliff edge at the Padang Tok Sheikh area of Gunung Jerai, following a search and rescue (SAR) operation launched after authorities received an emergency call.

The Kedah Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) said it received the distress report at 7.30pm on Tuesday before deploying a team from the Guar Cempedak Fire and Rescue Station to the location.

Upon arrival at around 8.02pm, rescuers were informed that hikers in the area had heard a voice calling for help coming from the ravine, prompting an intensified search operation.

According to JBPM, the man was believed to have been hiking alone on Sunday before slipping and falling into the ravine, leaving him without personal belongings and unable to contact anyone for assistance.

Rescue teams later used rope systems and specialised equipment to access the steep terrain and reach the victim’s location in the high-risk area.

The man was successfully brought up to safety at 9.37pm and given initial medical checks, where he was found to have no serious injuries and was in stable condition.

He was later handed over to police for documentation before being sent to Sungai Petani Hospital for further medical examination.

The SAR operation, which also involved the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) and the Ministry of Health (KKM), was fully concluded at 11.36pm after the area was declared safe.
