Barisan Nasional (BN) Melaka has stated that it has no objection to DAP vice-chairman Nga Kor Ming’s remark suggesting he would step down as Housing and Local Government Minister if BN were to win the Johor state election and Datuk Seri Najib Razak is released.
State BN chairman Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh said the coalition was not in any position to stop or challenge such a personal declaration, stressing that it ultimately rests on the individual concerned. He added that BN has no role in influencing or restricting the decision, should it be made.
Generally, political statements of this nature often spark wider public debate, especially when they involve high-profile figures and sensitive legal or political outcomes. However, Ab Rauf maintained that BN Melaka prefers to remain focused on governance and political responsibilities rather than engaging in speculative remarks.
He reiterated that if Nga Kor Ming has already expressed his intention to resign under certain conditions, then it is entirely his prerogative. According to him, no party has issued any instruction or pressure regarding the matter, and it should not be turned into a point of contention.
The matter was raised after Nga Kor Ming, in an interview with Oriental Daily, reportedly said he would be the first to step down if Najib is freed without conviction. He also did not rule out the possibility of DAP withdrawing from the Unity Government if such a situation occurs, describing it as a “red line” for the party.
Adding to the political narrative, Nga was also reported to have claimed that UMNO Johor had repeatedly voiced support for Najib’s early release, linking it to political slogans and party sentiment. These remarks have since contributed to renewed discussions within the broader political landscape.
Meanwhile, BN deputy chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said matters involving state government formation should not be tied to federal-level issues or personal political statements. He stressed that BN has no objection to Nga’s position and does not view it as an issue affecting the coalition’s stance.
