Malaysian Intern Sparks Debate After Claiming Parents Asked For RM500 Monthly Allowance

Date:

A Malaysian intern has ignited a heated online discussion after claiming her parents demanded RM500 a month from her even before she officially began her internship.

In a Threads post, the young woman revealed that she was due to start her internship the following day when her parents allegedly asked her to contribute RM500 every month. She admitted feeling overwhelmed, saying she was only just beginning her working life while already juggling financial responsibilities.

The intern explained that she had been paying her own university semester fees and was trying to plan for her future. She said the demand added to her stress as she was already managing existing debts while saving for further studies and other essential expenses.

After her post gained widespread attention, the intern disclosed that she would be receiving an internship allowance of RM1,800 per month. Although her employer provides hostel accommodation and lunch, she said she works 12-hour shifts and still has to pay for her own meals outside working hours.

She also claimed her family’s financial situation was relatively stable, saying her mother is still employed while her retired father receives income, with the household earning close to RM9,000 a month. According to her, she had already informed her parents about her financial commitments, including plans to obtain a driving licence, buy a car and continue her studies at degree level.

The intern further revealed that all of her expenses are self-funded. She said she still carries debts from her diploma years, including payments for purchases made through Atome and TikTok Shop, which she claimed were used to support her living expenses while studying.

Despite the disagreement, she stressed that she was not against helping her parents financially. Instead, she felt the amount requested was too high for someone who was only just entering the workforce. She said she would have been willing to contribute a smaller sum if it had not affected her ability to manage her own finances.

The discussion drew mixed reactions online. Many netizens sympathised with the intern, saying financial support for parents should be based on what an individual can realistically afford rather than obligation. Others advised her not to disclose her exact income in future, although she replied that her mother had asked to see her internship offer letter, making it difficult to keep her allowance private.

The viral post has since sparked wider conversations about family expectations, financial independence and whether young adults should prioritise supporting their parents or securing their own financial future during the early stages of their careers.
