Eight individuals, including five Myanmar nationals, were arrested for allegedly operating an illegal gambling activity during a police raid at the Selayang Wholesale Market on Tuesday night.
The operation, carried out at about 8pm by the D7 Anti-Vice, Gambling and Secret Societies Division of the Kuala Lumpur Criminal Investigation Department (CID), led to the arrest of three Malaysian men and five Myanmar men aged between 30 and 45.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said initial investigations found that two of the suspects were believed to be organising the gambling operation, while the remaining six were participating as players.
He said the gambling activity had allegedly been running for the past two months, operating daily between 7pm and 10pm in the market area.
During the raid, police seized a gambling table, a set of small glass bowls, three dice and RM6,266 in cash believed to be proceeds from the illegal gambling operation.
All eight suspects were taken to the Sentul district police headquarters for further investigation and have been remanded for four days.
The case is being investigated under Section 4B(a) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 as police continue efforts to curb illegal gambling activities in the capital.
