KL Barbecue Restaurant Ordered To Close After Cockroach Video Goes Viral

Date:

A barbecue restaurant in the capital has been ordered to close temporarily after a video allegedly showing cockroaches crawling inside a container of food went viral on social media.

The video, uploaded on Threads by a user identified as @aqilahmaria_, appeared to show several insects inside a tray containing raw meat placed next to a container of prawns.

The user who shared the footage said the discovery left her traumatised and urged others to examine their food carefully before eating.

“This happened yesterday. I am truly traumatised! I was hungry when I saw this. Please check your food before eating,” she wrote.

The post subsequently gained attention online, prompting Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to inspect the restaurant.

DBKL said the inspection was carried out by officers from the Premise Sanitation Unit under the Health Department’s Zone 5 Titiwangsa office.

Following the inspection, the premises were ordered to cease operations from 26 August until 9 September 2026 under the Licensing of Food Establishments (WPKL) By-Laws 2016.

DBKL said the temporary closure was intended to give the operator time to carry out corrective measures and conduct thorough cleaning of the premises.

“The closure is to allow the operator to carry out corrective measures and thorough cleaning works,” it said.

The local authority also stressed that it would continue monitoring food establishments across Kuala Lumpur to ensure operators meet required hygiene and public health standards.

“DBKL remains committed to ensuring that food premises in Kuala Lumpur comply with hygiene and public health requirements to safeguard the interests and safety of city residents,” it said.

The incident has also renewed calls for diners to remain vigilant about food hygiene, particularly when consuming raw ingredients that require proper storage and handling.
