A man was killed while another sustained injuries after an eight-tonne lorry they were travelling in veered off the road in an early morning accident at Kampung Paris 2, Kinabatangan.
The victim, identified as 48-year-old Juldam Mangkalial, who was the driver, died at the scene after being trapped beneath the heavy vehicle during the incident, which occurred at about 5am.
His 43-year-old companion, who was seated in the passenger seat, survived the crash but suffered injuries and was later given medical attention.
According to Kinabatangan Fire and Rescue Station chief Suriyadi Darwis, the department received an emergency call at 5.16am regarding the incident and immediately deployed a team to the location, which is about 40 kilometres from the station.
He said six firefighters were dispatched to the scene to carry out rescue operations involving both victims. The injured passenger was handed over to medical personnel for further treatment upon extraction.
The driver, who had been pinned beneath the lorry, required specialised rescue equipment and assistance from an excavator to lift the front section of the heavy vehicle that was crushing him.
Suriyadi said the victim was successfully removed but was confirmed dead at the scene before his remains were handed over to police for further action.
He added that the operation concluded at 7.30am after authorities confirmed the area was safe and no further hazards were present.
