A 33-year-old woman living in a small town in East Malaysia has opened up about the emotional scars left by her troubled childhood, revealing that despite achieving financial independence, she still struggles with painful memories of growing up in a difficult family environment.
In a personal post, the woman shared that she has a stable job, a good salary, her own house, a car and savings. However, behind what appears to be a comfortable life lies years of emotional distress that continue to affect her relationships and outlook on marriage.
She said she grew up in a middle-class family with three sisters. Her parents reportedly experienced eight pregnancies during their 13-year marriage, but only four daughters were born.
According to her account, one of the biggest problems at home was her father’s volatile temper and deeply rooted patriarchal attitudes. She recalled living in an environment filled with second-hand smoke and described her father as someone who always believed he was right, refused to admit mistakes and rarely helped with household chores.
She also alleged that her father frequently scolded her mother in front of the children, using hurtful words. While he appeared to be a kind and respectable person in front of relatives, she said his behaviour at home was completely different.
The woman recalled frightening incidents from her childhood, including occasions when her father allegedly threatened to kill the family with a knife. She also remembered him threatening to drink laundry water and leave the world together with them.
As a child, she struggled to understand why her mother continued to care for a husband who repeatedly treated her poorly. As she grew older, she began to wonder whether her father’s difficult upbringing and personal insecurities had contributed to his controlling behaviour, although she acknowledged that this was her own interpretation.
Determined to change her circumstances, she focused on her education and consistently achieved good academic results. At 18, she left her hometown to study and work elsewhere, including overseas.
She said she had largely built her life through her own efforts, without significant financial support from her family.
During her fourth year of working, she managed to buy her first home by living frugally and saving money. She has since started renovating the property and hopes to move in once the work is completed.
However, she said her mother often made her feel guilty about moving out, leaving her questioning whether wanting her own space was somehow wrong.
The woman also revealed that she discovered last year that she had a hereditary congenital heart defect which, according to her account, means she cannot become pregnant. Her parents are unaware of the condition, and she does not intend to tell them for now.
She admitted that she had always dreamed of having a daughter, hoping to give her child the love and care she felt she had missed out on during her own childhood.
However, she now finds herself questioning whether she is worthy of marriage and wonders whether the experiences she endured growing up have left her afraid of starting a family of her own.
For now, she said her priority is to finish renovating her house, move in and live peacefully on her own.
She added that seeing her father often brings back painful childhood memories, making her realise that the emotional wounds left by her upbringing have not simply disappeared with age.
Netizens Offer Words Of Encouragement
Her story prompted an outpouring of supportive comments from netizens, many of whom encouraged her to prioritise her own well-being and stop feeling guilty about choosing an independent life.
One commenter expressed sympathy for both the little girl she once was and the woman she has become, suggesting that she could learn to give herself the love and care she had longed for as a child, rather than relying on having a daughter to fulfil that wish.
Another urged her to stop dwelling on the past now that she had grown up and gained the ability to support herself, encouraging her to focus on living comfortably and loving herself.
Others reminded her not to spend her life following other people’s expectations, adding that she should take control of her own future and live in a way that makes her happy.
One netizen also stressed that there was no right or wrong in her decision to move out, warning her not to let guilt or emotional pressure dictate how she should live.
Her story has sparked discussion about the lasting effects of childhood experiences, highlighting how growing up in a troubled family can continue to influence a person’s confidence, sense of self-worth and attitudes towards love and marriage well into adulthood.
