DAP Secretary-General Takes Legal Action Over Alleged Defamation Claims

Date:

DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook has initiated legal action at the High Court against a lawyer over a series of alleged defamatory videos that were uploaded on social media earlier this year.

In the statement of claim, Loke said Ang Woei Shang, a columnist for a Chinese-language news outlet, had published three Facebook videos between 26 February and 8 May which allegedly linked the Seremban MP to matters involving pig farming issues and claims of a “corporate mafia”.

Loke, who is also the Transport Minister, alleged that the videos accused him of misleading the Chinese community regarding pig farming matters and of protecting corporate interests linked to the alleged group. He added that the content directly referred to him, with his images clearly featured in the videos.

The plaintiff further claimed that the statements made in the videos were produced in bad faith and had contributed to negative public perception and criticism against him on social media platforms.

His legal team stated that the remarks were not supported by factual evidence and had damaged his reputation, arguing that the publication amounted to defamation.

Loke is seeking general damages as well as a public apology from the defendant. The High Court has fixed 13 July for case management proceedings in the matter.
