MMEA Investigates Boat Collision Off Pulau Kapas After Viral Video Emerges

Date:

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in Terengganu is investigating an incident involving a Class C boat that is suspected of colliding with a Class A vessel before fleeing the scene off Pulau Kapas waters.

The incident went viral on social media after a video of the collision surfaced on Wednesday, drawing public attention.

Terengganu Maritime Director, Captain (Maritime) Hamiludin Che Awang, said investigations are ongoing to identify the vessels involved and gather relevant evidence.

He said preliminary findings suggest that the incident occurred after the skipper of the Class C boat allegedly fell asleep while operating the vessel, causing it to lose control.

The vessel then collided with the rear of a Class A boat, although no fatalities or injuries were reported among the crew.

He added that no police report has been lodged by the owner of the Class A boat regarding the incident.

However, both parties have reportedly reached an amicable settlement.

The owner of the Class C boat has agreed to fully bear the repair costs of the damaged Class A vessel, estimated at around RM10,000.

MMEA stressed that it will not compromise on any form of negligence in vessel operations that could endanger lives at sea.

Boat operators are reminded to ensure they are well-rested, alert and fully focused while handling vessels.

The agency will continue to intensify monitoring and enforcement in state waters to ensure maritime safety is maintained.

Members of the public with information on the incident are urged to contact the Terengganu Maritime Operations Centre at 013-7464357 or emergency line 999 for immediate action.
