Malaysia Named Among World’s Top 10 Retirement Destinations For 2026

Date:

Malaysia has secured a place among the world’s top retirement destinations for 2026, ranking 10th in the latest Annual Global Retirement Index published by International Living. The recognition highlights the country’s affordable lifestyle, quality healthcare and welcoming environment as key attractions for retirees looking to settle overseas.

The report singled out Penang as one of Malaysia’s standout retirement destinations, praising its unique blend of heritage, modern conveniences and vibrant food culture. According to the publication, the island offers retirees a relaxed pace of life, a strong sense of community and a cost of living that remains significantly lower than many Western countries.

Housing affordability was among Malaysia’s strongest selling points. The report noted that foreigners can rent modern apartments in popular areas such as George Town, Pulau Tikus and Tanjung Tokong at competitive rates, while those looking to purchase property can do so subject to state minimum price requirements. Low property taxes and the availability of freehold titles were also highlighted as advantages.

Healthcare also received high praise, with the report describing Malaysia’s private medical system as both affordable and reliable. Hospitals such as Island Hospital, Gleneagles Hospital and Adventist Hospital in Penang were recognised for their modern facilities and internationally trained doctors, offering quality treatment at a fraction of the cost found in many developed countries.

Beyond affordability, the publication said Malaysia’s multicultural society, widespread use of English and welcoming communities make it easier for foreigners to adapt. Expats were also found to integrate well with locals through community events, sports clubs and volunteer activities, creating a strong social support network.

The report also highlighted Malaysia’s long-term stay options, including the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme and Sarawak MM2H, alongside the DE Rantau Pass for digital nomads, as attractive pathways for foreigners wishing to reside in the country.

According to International Living, Malaysia continues to stand out for offering a combination of affordable living, quality healthcare, diverse housing options and a safe, comfortable lifestyle, making it one of the world’s most attractive destinations for retirees in 2026.

The report ranked Greece as the world’s best retirement destination for 2026, followed by Panama in second place and Costa Rica in third. Portugal claimed fourth place, while Mexico, Italy, France, Spain and Thailand rounded out the rankings ahead of Malaysia, which completed the global top 10.
