A man has died after setting himself on fire outside the United Nations headquarters in New York on Thursday, according to the New York Police Department (NYPD).
Police said they received a call at 6.32pm local time reporting the incident at the intersection of First Avenue and 42nd Street, where the man was found with severe burn injuries.
He was later taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, while authorities confirmed that an investigation into the circumstances is ongoing.
The NYPD did not disclose any possible motive behind the incident.
The New York Post reported that the individual was carrying a Tibetan flag at the time, although this detail has not been independently verified by AFP.
The United Nations has not yet issued any statement in response to the incident.
