An Indonesian teenager has been arrested on suspicion of raping his 15-year-old biological sister, resulting in her becoming pregnant and giving birth to a baby in Lebong Regency, Indonesia.
The case came to light after DNA testing established a 99.99 per cent match between the suspect and the samples examined by authorities.
According to local media reports, Lebong Police Criminal Investigation Unit chief AKP Darmawel Saleh said the 17-year-old suspect, who is already married, allegedly committed the offence after claiming that his wife had refused his requests for sexual intercourse.
Investigations found that the suspect allegedly raped his sister three times over three consecutive days in January.
Darmawel said the suspect was believed to have used persuasion, force and threats against the victim when she tried to resist.
The alleged abuse resulted in the girl becoming pregnant before she gave birth to a baby on Sept 23.
Police initially investigated another man in connection with the case, but DNA results received on Oct 5 ruled him out.
Further investigations followed, and the victim reportedly revealed the possible involvement of her biological brother during her statement on Oct 8.
Additional samples were subsequently sent to the South Sumatra Police Forensic Laboratory on Oct 9 for further examination.
The results received on Oct 26 confirmed a DNA match, allowing police to identify the teenager as the suspected perpetrator.
Darmawel said the suspect was subsequently arrested and is now being held at the Lebong Police Headquarters to assist investigations.
If convicted, he faces a maximum prison sentence of 12 years.
Meanwhile, Bengkulu Police have urged the public not to share the victim’s identity, photographs or personal information to protect her privacy and well-being.
The victim has also been provided with assistance and support throughout her medical examinations and childbirth.
