Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has said that a win in the Johor state election is vital for the coalition’s path back to federal power in the next general election.
BN, which is currently part of the Pakatan Harapan-led unity government, views the Johor polls as a key stepping stone to strengthen its national position.
Zahid said a victory in Johor would help generate momentum ahead of the upcoming state elections in Negeri Sembilan and Melaka, according to Utusan Malaysia.
He added that Johor would serve as an important benchmark for BN’s performance in the subsequent polls, with Negeri Sembilan scheduled to vote on Aug 1 followed by Melaka.
He expressed confidence that success in these three states would help reinforce BN’s standing nationwide and shape a new political landscape ahead of the 16th general election.
“God willing, victory in Johor will also translate into victories elsewhere,” he was quoted as saying.
Zahid, who is also deputy prime minister, said BN’s campaign in Johor has gained steady momentum since nominations were held on June 27.
He also downplayed attempts by political rivals to raise “old issues”, including matters linked to former prime minister Najib Razak, saying such tactics have had little effect on voters in Johor.
He urged opponents to focus on professional campaigning and avoid bringing up unrelated matters during the election period.
