PM Anwar Tells Onn Hafiz Not To Politicise JS-SEZ In Johor Polls

Date:

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged Johor Barisan Nasional chief and caretaker Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi not to use the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) as political material during the state election campaign.

Anwar said the project is a federal-level initiative jointly implemented with the Johor government, and should not be politicised for electoral gain.

He clarified that the agreement for the JS-SEZ was signed at the highest level between the Prime Ministers of Malaysia and Singapore, and not at the state leadership level.

“Don’t turn this into an issue. The project is ongoing, involves significant federal expenditure, and is supported by the government,” he was quoted as saying by Berita Harian after Friday prayers in Kuala Lumpur.

Anwar also criticised attempts to frame the matter politically, describing such actions as inappropriate.

His remarks came after Onn Hafiz reportedly accused the federal government of delaying the launch of the Johor-Singapore economic initiative master plan.

In a post on X, Onn Hafiz claimed the launch had been postponed multiple times, raising concerns that further delays could affect investor confidence and economic momentum.
