Two men were injured after they were allegedly attacked by a group of assailants while attempting to retrieve a motorcycle left near a temple along Jalan Pengkalan, Kampung Pengkalan Rama Pantai, in the early hours of Monday.
The incident happened at around 1am, when the victims, aged 41 and 46, arrived on a motorcycle before stopping to collect another motorcycle that had been left at the location.
Acting Melaka Tengah District Police Chief Superintendent Halim Abas said the pair were suddenly assaulted by several men armed with plastic chairs, motorcycle helmets and a wooden stick.
One of the victims suffered deep cuts to his forehead and chin, while the other sustained a fractured skull and was seriously injured in the attack.
Both men were taken to Melaka Hospital for treatment, with the more seriously injured victim admitted to the red zone.
Police received information about the assault at 1.48am and quickly launched an operation that resulted in the arrest of five local men, aged between 23 and 34.
Investigations revealed that two of the suspects have previous criminal records, while the victims reportedly did not know any of the attackers. Police said the motive behind the assault is still being investigated.
The five suspects have been remanded for six days until 10 July, and the case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt using dangerous weapons.
