PERKESO’s 24-Hour Accident Scheme Is Protection, Not A Burden, Says Minister

Date:

Human Resources Minister R. Ramanan has urged Malaysians not to view the Social Security Organisation’s (PERKESO) 24-Hour Non-Work Accident Scheme (LINDUNG 24 Jam) as an unnecessary expense, stressing that it provides vital financial protection for workers and their families.

Speaking after officiating the LINDUNG Kerjaya MADANI Carnival in Bandar Sri Sendayan, Seremban, Ramanan said the scheme serves as an important social safety net for contributors who suffer accidents or become unable to work, comparing its importance to having medical insurance.

“If people see these contributions as a burden, they only realise their value after tragedy strikes,” he said.

He pointed to the growing number of accident victims seeking assistance, particularly in Sungai Buloh, where many have suffered injuries such as broken arms and legs after motorcycle accidents. According to him, many of those injured are no longer able to work or care for their children, elderly parents or family members.

“Only after the accident do they come to us for help. When I ask why they did not contribute to PERKESO, they regret it. That is why I hope everyone will contribute. It is a form of protection, and whatever happens, at least you have some financial security,” he said.

Ramanan stressed that workers should not take their social protection lightly, adding that PERKESO coverage should be regarded as essential, just like maintaining medical insurance.

He also revealed that within the first month of the LINDUNG 24 Jam scheme, PERKESO has been receiving nearly 20 accident reports every day for benefit claims.

The minister warned that the number of claims is expected to rise further during festive seasons, when the risk of road accidents typically increases, highlighting the importance of ensuring workers are protected before accidents happen.
