Malaysia Assures Sufficient Petroleum Supply Through End Of 2026 Despite Global Tensions

Date:

Malaysia’s petroleum supply is expected to remain safe and sufficient from July to December 2026 despite ongoing global geopolitical uncertainties, the Ministry of Economy has assured.

In a written reply published on Parliament’s website, the ministry said the country’s oil and fuel supply remained stable and adequate as of June 2026, following a series of proactive measures introduced after disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz began on 28 February 2026.

The ministry noted that global oil prices have eased in recent months, with Brent crude falling from a peak of US$144.50 per barrel in early April to US$99.29 per barrel between 1 and 5 June 2026. The decline reflects improving market sentiment following progress in peace negotiations.

However, the government stressed that it is not taking the situation lightly, warning that physical supply constraints and declining global petroleum inventories continue to pose potential risks.

The statement was issued in response to a parliamentary question from Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin (PN–Larut), who sought updates on Malaysia’s petroleum security, projected fuel stocks for the second half of 2026, and the government’s mitigation plans amid global geopolitical conflicts.

According to the Ministry of Economy, the government remains committed to ensuring sufficient fuel supplies, maintaining stable prices and protecting consumers from the impact of volatile global markets.

To strengthen the country’s energy security, Malaysia is relying on three key strategies: diversifying petroleum import sources, increasing domestic fuel production through biodiesel, and securing long-term supply agreements.

The ministry said this multi-layered approach provides Malaysia with greater flexibility and resilience in managing supply disruptions. Additional mitigation measures include tighter enforcement against fuel leakages and continuous data-driven monitoring to safeguard the nation’s fuel supply.
