A heated argument between football supporters erupted into a violent brawl at a mamak restaurant in Johor after fans celebrating Argentina’s World Cup victory allegedly clashed with supporters of the opposing team.
The incident, believed to have taken place on Tuesday night at a mamak outlet in Taman Universiti, Skudai, saw chairs being hurled across the restaurant as rival groups exchanged punches and pushed one another during the chaos.
Videos circulating on social media showed several individuals fighting outside the restaurant, while another clip captured a group of Argentina fans chanting the name of football superstar Lionel Messi inside the premises moments before the situation escalated.
The disorder reportedly prompted the restaurant operator to immediately switch off the large-screen live broadcast of the 2026 FIFA World Cup match in an effort to calm the crowd and prevent the confrontation from worsening.
According to online claims, the altercation was triggered by supporters backing different teams after Argentina defeated Egypt in a World Cup match held in Mexico. Although the tournament is taking place thousands of kilometres away, emotions among local football fans appeared to spill over into violence.
The incident has since sparked debate online, with many Malaysians questioning why supporters would resort to fighting over teams they have no direct connection to, especially given that Malaysia is not competing in the tournament.
One social media user remarked, “You’re Malaysian, not Argentinian. If anyone should be devastated by Egypt’s defeat, it should be Egypt’s fans.”
Johor Bahru North police have confirmed they are investigating the incident.
