Government Has Paid RM42.5 Billion To Settle 1MDB Commitments

Date:

The government has paid RM42.5 billion to settle debts and commitments linked to 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), including principal payments, interest, legal fees, operational costs and other related obligations.

Deputy Finance Minister Liew Chin Tong said the government remains responsible for a government-guaranteed Sukuk Islamic Medium Term Notes amounting to RM8.9 billion.

He said the outstanding commitment consists of RM5 billion in principal payments and RM3.9 billion in interest, with the maturity date set for 2039.

Liew said the total 1MDB-related obligations that have been paid and are still being shouldered by the government amount to RM51.4 billion.

Meanwhile, funds recovered in relation to 1MDB have reached RM31.3 billion, reducing the remaining financial burden faced by the government.

He said if no further recovery of funds is made in the future, the government would still need to bear RM20.1 billion from the total outstanding obligations.

Liew was responding to a question from Chong Chieng Jen (PH-Stampin) in the Dewan Rakyat regarding the total amount of 1MDB debts assumed by the federal government and the payments made to settle the obligations so far.
