Four individuals, including two brothers, have claimed trial at the Magistrate’s Court here for allegedly operating an online gambling centre in April.
The four accused, identified as Eow Yao Ping, 25; Eow Yong Huang, 30; Tan Yan Zhong, 25; and Cheng Chean Seng, 61, entered not guilty pleas before Magistrate Noor Farah Hazwani Osman on Thursday.
According to the charge, the accused allegedly acted together with a common intention to manage an open gambling premises, specifically an online gambling operation centre.
The offence was allegedly committed between about 4.20pm and 6pm on April 7 at Taman Kampung Raja.
They were charged under Section 4(1)(c) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code.
If convicted, the accused may face a fine of between RM5,000 and RM50,000, as well as imprisonment for up to three years.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Adlin Saffiya Kamaruzaman led the prosecution, while the accused were represented by lawyers from the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK).
The prosecution initially offered bail of RM8,000 with one surety for each accused. However, the defence requested a lower amount, stating that the accused had no issues attending court proceedings when required.
The court later allowed each accused to be released on RM6,000 bail and fixed Aug 11 for further mention of the case.
