MACC Probes Bribery Claim Involving Johor Election Candidate

Date:

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has received three reports related to the 16th Johor state election, including one allegation of bribery involving an election candidate.

MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Abd Halim Aman said one of the reports was submitted by the Election Campaign Enforcement Team (PP-KPR) in Batu Pahat, while the remaining two were public complaints.

He said all reports are currently being assessed and investigated in accordance with the relevant laws.

“If there is any element of corruption during this election, regardless of the political party, candidate, voter or supporter involved, it will be treated as corruption.

“I will not comment further, but in this case, it involves a candidate,” he told reporters during a press conference at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya.

Abd Halim also announced that the commission has activated election operations rooms in Johor Bahru, Segamat, Kluang, Batu Pahat and Mersing to make it easier for the public to report allegations of corruption and abuse of power throughout the election period.

He stressed that the MACC will not compromise with any individual found to be involved in election-related corruption, regardless of their background, in order to safeguard the integrity of the democratic process.

“A clean election not only strengthens the integrity of the democratic system but also reinforces public confidence in national institutions,” he said.

Abd Halim also reminded all candidates, political parties, supporters and voters to comply with the law throughout the campaign period and on polling day.

A total of 2.7 million eligible voters are expected to cast their ballots on Saturday to elect 56 representatives to the Johor State Legislative Assembly.
