Ten residents were left homeless after a fire destroyed five bilik at Rumah Hendry Gomes in Kampung Mission, Ulu Teru, Tinjar, Baram.
The affected residents included three women and three children who were forced to leave their homes following the incident.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) operations control centre said it received an emergency call regarding the incident at about 2am.
Firefighters from the Lopeng and Lutong fire stations were deployed to the location, which was located about 134 kilometres away.
However, the team faced difficulties reaching the scene due to the challenging terrain, including hilly areas, narrow access roads and rocky conditions. The journey took more than four hours before firefighters arrived at the location.
Upon arrival, the operation commander found that around 95 per cent of the affected units had already been destroyed by the blaze.
Bomba said nearby residents had attempted to control the fire while waiting for assistance by using 36 fire extinguishers and buckets of water.
“Firefighters carried out overhaul operations to extinguish remaining hotspots and visible smoke,” the department said in a statement.
Initial investigations found that the fire was believed to have been caused by faulty electrical wiring.
No injuries were reported in the incident and no temporary evacuation centre was required as the affected residents are currently staying with relatives.
The firefighting operation ended at 9.35am after firefighters confirmed there was no remaining risk of the fire reigniting.
