The Election Commission (EC) has called on employers to provide sufficient time for registered voters to carry out their civic duty during the 16th Johor State Election on Saturday.
EC secretary Datuk Khairul Shahril Idrus said the commission was aware of concerns raised by the public that some employers may not provide their workers with adequate time to cast their ballots.
He reminded employers to comply with Section 25 of the Election Offences Act 1954, which requires registered voters to be given the opportunity to exercise their voting rights.
“Employers are not allowed to deduct wages or any other form of remuneration, or impose penalties on employees for carrying out their responsibilities as voters,” he said in a statement.
Khairul Shahril warned that employers who directly or indirectly prevent workers from voting or fail to provide a reasonable period for them to do so could face legal action.
Those found guilty may be fined up to RM5,000, sentenced to imprisonment for up to one year, or both.
He also urged employers to cooperate with the authorities to ensure the election process runs smoothly while encouraging higher voter participation.
A total of 172 candidates are competing for 56 seats in the 16th Johor State Election.
