Banting School Stabbing: Teenage Girl Sent For Psychiatric Assessment

Date:

A 15-year-old girl has been charged at the Telok Datok Magistrate’s Court with allegedly attempting to murder her female schoolmate in a stabbing incident at a secondary school in Banting.

The juvenile accused did not enter a plea during the proceedings as the court is awaiting a psychiatric evaluation report. The case was heard in a closed-door session before Magistrate Maslinda Selamat and was attended by members of the accused’s family.

The court granted the prosecution’s request for the teenager, who appeared wearing a black hoodie, to undergo a mental health assessment at Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta in Perak.

According to the charge sheet, the Form Three student allegedly attempted to kill a 15-year-old female student by using a knife, causing injuries with the intention of causing death. The alleged offence took place at the school at around 9.50am on July 6.

The charge was filed under Section 307 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum imprisonment term of 20 years upon conviction.

During the proceedings, Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Amirul Syafiq Yazid agreed for the teenager, who was reported to have autism, to undergo a psychiatric assessment under Section 342 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The court has set August 11 for the next mention of the case. Due to the involvement of a juvenile accused, members of the media who arrived at the court were not allowed to enter the courtroom.

Previously, reports stated that a 15-year-old female student was injured after she was allegedly stabbed multiple times by a schoolmate during recess at the school canteen.

The incident, which occurred at about 9.30am, left the victim with injuries to several parts of her body, including her lungs. She is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
