A supermarket located along Lebuh Raya Thean Teik here has been ordered to shut down for 14 days after authorities found its cleanliness level to be unsatisfactory.
The closure notice was issued by the Ministry of Health (MOH) under Section 11 of the Food Act 1983, with the order taking immediate effect from Wednesday until July 21.
State Youth, Sports and Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen said the action was taken following inspections that found the supermarket failed to meet required hygiene standards.
“The closure order was issued after the premises were found to have unsatisfactory cleanliness conditions,” he said when contacted today.
Daniel Gooi stressed that authorities would not compromise on food safety and public health issues, adding that operators had previously been given advice and warnings to improve hygiene practices.
“We will not compromise with any party as this involves food safety and public health,” he said.
The supermarket is understood to be a popular shopping destination among nearby residents due to its affordable prices and lower-cost fresh produce.
Meanwhile, photos of the premises along with details of the closure notice went viral on Facebook, attracting attention from social media users.
One user, Natasya Sara Soo, claimed the supermarket had long been known for poor hygiene conditions and unpleasant odours.
She alleged that rats could be seen moving around inside the premises and said she had stopped visiting the supermarket for more than seven years due to its condition.
Another user, Kesneshreshven Geet, said the closure confirmed his previous concerns about the supermarket’s cleanliness.
He said he had initially thought he was the only person who viewed the premises as unhygienic, but believed the latest action showed that authorities had identified the same issues.
