A man was found burnt to death after a fire destroyed a house and a shop at Batu Putih Sandakan Lorong 3 early Sunday morning.
The victim, identified as Mohd Zarman Salamat, 30, was believed to have been unable to escape before his body was discovered inside a bedroom at about 6.04am.
Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) Chief Jimmy Lagung said his department received an emergency call regarding the incident at 4.56am.
He said 12 firefighters were deployed to the scene, located about nine kilometres from the Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station.
“The fire involved a non-permanent house and a shop, both of which were completely destroyed.
“Based on initial information, one victim was reported to be involved in the incident and firefighting operations were immediately carried out,” he said when contacted.
Jimmy said the blaze was brought under control at about 5.34am.
Following further checks inside the burnt structure, firefighters discovered the victim’s body in the middle section of the house, believed to be the bedroom area.
The remains were later handed over to police for further action, while further details regarding the incident will be updated from time to time.
