Argentina Edge Switzerland In Extra-Time Thriller To Reach World Cup Semi-Finals

Date:

Argentina secured a place in the 2026 World Cup semi-finals after defeating Switzerland 3-1 in a thrilling quarter-final encounter that went into extra time in Kansas City.

The defending champions were forced to battle for 120 minutes before finally overcoming a determined Switzerland side, who played with 10 men from the 72nd minute, to keep their title defence alive.

Lionel Scaloni’s team made a fast start, taking the lead through Alexis Mac Allister in the 10th minute after applying early pressure.

However, Switzerland responded strongly and levelled the score in the 67th minute through Dan Ndoye, forcing the match into extra time after both sides remained tied at 1-1 after normal time.

Switzerland’s hopes suffered a major setback when striker Breel Embolo was shown a red card in the 72nd minute after receiving a second yellow card for simulation.

Despite being reduced to 10 players, Switzerland continued to defend resolutely and frustrated Argentina until Julián Alvarez finally broke the deadlock in extra time with a powerful strike that beat goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.

Lautaro Martinez then sealed Argentina’s victory with a third goal in the 121st minute, ending Switzerland’s challenge and confirming their place in the final four.

Argentina will now face England in the semi-finals after the Three Lions earlier eliminated Norway 2-1 in another dramatic quarter-final match that was also decided in extra time.
