Two people have been killed while five others were injured following a shooting incident in Toronto on Saturday, according to a police emergency alert.
Toronto police said officers found five victims suffering from gunshot wounds after responding to reports of an active shooter. Two of the victims were later pronounced dead at the scene, while the conditions of the remaining injured individuals have not yet been confirmed.
The incident took place in Midtown Toronto during the Salsa on St. Clair festival, an annual Latin cultural event that was taking place in the area.
Authorities advised members of the public to stay away from the location as police continued their investigation and carried out response operations.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed shock over the incident and said police had his full support in efforts to identify and arrest those responsible.
“My prayers are with the families grieving their loved ones, those who are in critical condition and everyone affected by this horrific event,” he said in a statement shared on X.
A Toronto Police spokesperson said no further details could be released at the time, including information about possible suspects, the motive behind the shooting or any arrests made.
Police said updates would be provided once more information became available as investigations into the deadly incident continued.
