Op Mabuk In Miri Nets Drunk Driver, 42 Traffic Summonses Issued

Date:

A special Op Mabuk conducted by the Miri District Police Headquarters (IPD Miri) Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division led to the arrest of a local man and the issuance of 42 traffic summonses.

Miri District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the operation was carried out from 11pm on July 11 until 3am on July 12 along Jalan Miri-Airport as part of efforts to tackle drink driving and other road offences.

In a statement shared on IPD Miri’s official Facebook page, he said police inspected 91 individuals consisting of 72 men and 19 women, as well as 86 vehicles throughout the operation.

A total of 42 summonses were issued for various violations, including driving without a valid licence, illegal vehicle modifications, expired road tax, failure to display the probationary ‘P’ plate and other technical offences.

The operation involved a senior police officer and nine traffic personnel from IPD Miri.

Mohd Farhan said a 37-year-old local man was arrested after being suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol.

He said a preliminary breath test using the Screening Device 2 (SD2) showed the presence of alcohol while the man was driving, before a blood sample was taken at the Miri Hospital Forensic Department for further investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a fine between RM10,000 and RM30,000, imprisonment of up to two years, and a two-year disqualification from holding or obtaining a driving licence for first-time offenders upon conviction.

Mohd Farhan stressed that police would continue taking firm action against motorists driving under the influence of alcohol, as such offences could endanger both the drivers and other road users.

He also reminded the public to comply with traffic regulations, avoid illegal vehicle modifications and refrain from activities that could threaten road safety.
