The mother of Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman says the family can now prepare for his wedding to singer and actress Bella Astillah with peace of mind after his acquittal by the Federal Court.
Sharifah Mahani Syed Abdul Aziz admitted that the family had deliberately put all wedding plans on hold while awaiting the outcome of her son’s final appeal.
“We haven’t made any preparations because we were waiting for today’s decision. Whenever people asked when the wedding would be, I never answered. I only wanted to wait for the court’s decision first,” she told reporters.
She said the court’s ruling in Syed Saddiq’s favour brought immense relief to the family, adding that she could not imagine having to proceed with wedding plans if the outcome had been different.
“When the decision was in Syed Saddiq’s favour, I was overjoyed. Imagine if the outcome had been negative today. I didn’t want to disappoint another family’s child. That would have weighed heavily on me,” she said.
Sharifah Mahani revealed that the family can now fully focus on preparing for the couple’s wedding, which is expected to take place later this year.
“Now we can finally start making all the preparations. Before this, we simply weren’t in the mood because of the court case. This has been going on for many years, so now let them enjoy their happiness,” she said.
She also admitted that the days leading up to the verdict had been emotionally exhausting.
“I couldn’t sleep and I couldn’t eat. People always say that when you’re in love you lose sleep, but this was something completely different,” she said.
Sharifah Mahani also expressed gratitude that her son has been surrounded by people who genuinely care for him, especially Bella Astillah, who stood by his side throughout the lengthy court proceedings.
“It wasn’t easy for anyone to be with Syed Saddiq because he had to keep going in and out of court. I often wondered whether he would find someone willing to make those sacrifices and go through all of this with him. Alhamdulillah, Bella did,” she said.
She added that Bella had not only supported Syed Saddiq emotionally but had also stood beside him as they worked together during difficult times.
“She brought happiness back into my son’s life. Anyone who can give my son that kind of happiness is worthy of becoming my daughter-in-law,” she said.
