More Tiger Images Detected As Perhilitan Monitors Bukit Bangkong

Date:

More images of a Malayan tiger have been captured through camera traps placed at the Bukit Bangkong recreational area in Chemor, Perak.

Perak Science, Environment and Green Technology Committee chairman Teh Kok Lim said the footage was recorded on March 13 and April 20 at two locations — an alternative trail leading to the peak and the summit area of Bukit Bangkong.

He said checks by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) found that the tiger captured in the latest recordings was a different animal from the one previously detected in the area.

“The tiger is estimated to be around three years old, with paw prints measuring about 12 centimetres.

“Identification was carried out based on the stripe patterns on both sides of its body, as every tiger has a unique pattern,” he said in a statement.

The area previously raised concerns among residents after reports emerged in December last year of suspected tiger attacks that resulted in two cattle being killed and five others reported missing.

Following the incidents, authorities increased security measures and temporarily closed the recreational area to the public as a precaution.

Teh Kok Lim said the location is believed to be part of the tiger’s roaming route, based on the discovery of paw prints and remains of cattle that had been attacked.

He added that Perhilitan is continuing monitoring efforts by maintaining six camera traps at three separate locations, while also activating special traps to track the animal’s movements.

Monitoring is carried out daily or at least once every two days to ensure the situation remains under control.

Teh Kok Lim advised the public to continue following safety guidelines, including avoiding solo activities and staying away from the area during certain times.

Among the recommended precautions are starting outdoor activities after 9am, returning before 5pm, keeping livestock secured and avoiding any actions that could provoke wildlife.

On reopening Bukit Bangkong, he said Perhilitan has no objection to allowing access through the main route to the peak, while alternative routes should remain closed.

However, the proposal has received objections from the Tanah Hitam Village Development and Security Committee (JPKK).
