A 23-year-old woman was charged at the Magistrate’s Court here on Thursday with allegedly murdering her newborn baby last week.
Supermarket sales assistant Siti Nur Wahida Zainudin nodded in understanding after the charge was read out before Magistrate Ameera Mastura Khamis.
However, no plea was recorded from the accused as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
According to the charge, Siti Nur Wahida was accused of causing the death of her newborn baby girl at a condominium unit in Persiaran Mulia, Subang Jaya, between 5am and 5.30pm on July 7.
The charge was framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years, and if the death penalty is not imposed, the accused may also face a minimum of 12 strokes of whipping upon conviction.
The prosecution was handled by Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Akhilah Rosmi, while the accused was unrepresented by a lawyer during the proceedings.
The court did not grant bail and fixed Oct 23 for the submission of documents and the appointment of legal representation.
The case will proceed through further legal proceedings after the relevant documents are submitted.
