The Sarawak Heart Centre has achieved a major milestone after successfully carrying out the first Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve Implantation (TPVI) procedure in Borneo.
The achievement also places Sarawak Heart Centre as the second hospital under the Ministry of Health (MOH) to offer the highly specialised and advanced structural heart intervention procedure.
In a statement shared on its official Facebook page on Friday, the centre said the historic accomplishment was made possible through close collaboration with a team of specialists from Serdang Hospital, who worked alongside Sarawak Heart Centre’s multidisciplinary team.
The centre said the cooperation highlighted the importance of knowledge sharing, teamwork and MOH’s commitment to expanding access to advanced cardiac treatment facilities across Malaysia, particularly in East Malaysia.
The successful introduction of TPVI involved the expertise of paediatric cardiologists, anaesthetists, nurses, radiographers and supporting staff who worked together to ensure the procedure was carried out smoothly.
The centre said the development provides new hope for patients requiring pulmonary valve replacement, as the minimally invasive procedure may help speed up recovery, reduce hospital stays and improve patients’ quality of life.
Sarawak Heart Centre reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening access to modern cardiovascular care, adopting the latest medical innovations and continuously improving its services for the benefit of Sarawak residents and Malaysians.
Meanwhile, Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Hian Kong, who is also Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister, congratulated the Sarawak Heart Centre team for the achievement.
