Police have launched an investigation into a suspected vandalism case at a secondary school in Kampar after several tables and chairs were found burnt inside a classroom yesterday.
Kampar District Police Chief Superintendent Mohamad Nazri Daud said the incident was discovered at around 10.30am by a school prefect who was monitoring classrooms during recess.
He said the prefect noticed the smell of smoke before checking a classroom and found a plastic chair on fire.
“The prefect then informed a teacher nearby, and the fire was quickly extinguished using a wet cloth,” he said when contacted by Bernama on Saturday.
Mohamad Nazri said police investigations at the scene found that the fire occurred in a classroom located at the end of the school’s three-storey building.
He said no students were present at the block during the incident as they had been instructed to attend a counselling programme at the school hall.
“Initial investigations found that there was no closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera installed at the location. So far, no witnesses have come forward and no suspect has been identified,” he said.
He added that the school had also conducted an internal investigation but was unable to determine the individual responsible, leading to a police report being lodged to assist further investigations.
The case is being investigated as a vandalism offence, while efforts are ongoing to identify those involved.
