Activist Remanded Two Days Over Alleged Facebook Threat Case

Date:

A Magistrate’s Court here today allowed police to remand an activist for two days to assist investigations into an alleged threat made against a man through Facebook last March.

Negeri Sembilan Police Chief Datuk Alzafny Ahmad said the remand order, which is effective until July 20, was issued by Assistant Registrar Naeilah Nikrul Tarmizi to facilitate investigations into the case.

He said police received a report from a man at about 6.25pm on March 10, who claimed he had been threatened by the suspect through Facebook.

“The complainant alleged that he received messages from a Facebook account believed to belong to the activist, containing a challenge to fight as well as elements of threats,” he said when contacted today.

The 33-year-old activist, who is known for raising issues related to places of worship on social media, arrived at the Seremban Court Complex at about 9.40am accompanied by police officers.

According to the case details, the complainant said he had no intention of provoking any confrontation but became concerned for his own safety and that of his family, prompting him to lodge a police report.

Alzafny said the case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Previously, police confirmed that the activist, who was believed to have gone abroad following the alleged Facebook threat case, had surrendered himself at the Port Dickson District Police Headquarters (IPD).

The activist had earlier announced his intention to surrender after spending about five months overseas, claiming he returned to Port Dickson to support his friend who was contesting as an Independent candidate in the Sri Tanjung seat during the Negeri Sembilan state election.
