Construction Work Halted After Methane Gas Leak Found At Tudan Site

Piling work at a construction site along Jalan Perdana, Tudan was temporarily stopped after workers discovered gas leaking from a cylindrical pile on Sunday morning.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) operation control centre received an emergency call at about 7.45am, prompting firefighters from the Lutong Fire and Rescue Station to be deployed to the location, which was around 11 kilometres away.

Operation commander and station chief Henry Jugah said firefighters arrived at the scene wearing full personal protective equipment (PPE) before setting up a safety perimeter around the affected area.

He said the team immediately monitored the situation and took precautionary measures to control the leak from the cylinder.

“The cylinder releasing the gas was temporarily sealed while awaiting further inspection,” he said in a statement.

A contractor from Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros) was also present at the site to identify the type and composition of the gas detected.

Following the inspection, Henry said the gas was identified as methane.

He added that the Bomba Bintulu Hazardous Material (Hazmat) team would be sent to the location to carry out further checks on other possible gases present at the site.

After confirming that the situation was under control and safe, the firefighting team concluded the operation at 10.04am.
