Jordan is emerging as a new flashpoint in the growing conflict between Iran and the United States (US) after the country became the target of several attacks, signalling that tensions in West Asia are entering a more intense phase.
Within five days, four attacks were reported against US military bases in Amman, raising concerns that Jordan could become another major battleground in the ongoing confrontation.
The latest attack on Friday, reportedly launched by Tehran, killed two US soldiers, injured four others and left one personnel missing, prompting a stronger response from Washington.
Since the beginning of the conflict, Jordan has taken on a more significant role in the US military strategy across West Asia.
Reports stated that the Pentagon had relocated some of its troops from Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Qatar to Jordan and Israel after those locations faced retaliatory attacks linked to Iran, with Jordan viewed as a safer alternative.
At the same time, several US allies in the region have started limiting Washington’s access to military bases and airspace, making Amman an increasingly important asset for American military operations.
Analysts believe Iran’s decision to target Jordan was a strategic move aimed not only at disrupting US military activities but also increasing political pressure on Washington and its regional partners.
Former US Air Force Lieutenant General David Deptula said the attacks were not merely directed at a military installation but were also intended to send a broader political message.
“The attacks were aimed at increasing political pressure on Jordan for hosting American troops while affecting joint US military operations in the region,” he said.
The latest developments have sparked concerns that Jordan may no longer be viewed simply as a transit route or logistical hub in the US-Iran rivalry.
If the cycle of attacks and retaliation continues to escalate, Jordan risks becoming a new frontline in the conflict, potentially drawing more Gulf nations into a wider regional crisis.
