Kelantan police have raised concerns over the growing number of commercial crime cases in the state, with losses exceeding RM23.6 million recorded in the first six months of this year.
Kelantan Police Chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the number of cases increased by more than 100 per cent, rising from 732 cases previously to 1,480 cases between January and June.
He said the financial losses also showed a significant increase, from RM17.03 million to RM23.6 million, describing the trend as worrying and requiring immediate attention.
According to him, the surge was largely driven by online scams, particularly phone scams, e-commerce fraud, online investment schemes and fake job offers that continue to target members of the public.
“Efforts to combat commercial crimes require continuous enforcement action, while public education and awareness must also be strengthened to prevent people from falling victim to scams,” he said.
Mohd Yusoff added that Kelantan police would intensify awareness campaigns through social media platforms to educate residents about the latest scam tactics.
He said fraud cases have become increasingly widespread, with victims losing large amounts of money, including those who were deceived while searching for employment opportunities.
The police chief stressed that the rise in commercial crimes was not a new issue, as similar increases of more than 100 per cent were also recorded in the previous year.
Authorities continue to urge the public to remain cautious, verify information before making financial decisions and report suspicious activities to prevent further losses.
