A local singer has come under fire online after complaining that a mamak stall charged him RM10 for seven pieces of prawns, with many netizens saying the price was reasonable and accusing him of overreacting.
In a post on Threads, Farhan Maarob called on the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) to investigate a mamak stall in Cheras, claiming the eatery was charging excessive prices.
Farhan shared a photo of his receipt, showing he was charged RM10 for seven small prawns. The meal also included RM2 for white rice, RM6 for fried chicken and RM4.80 for an iced Milo. After the 6% Sales and Service Tax (SST) was added, the total bill came to RM24.15.
While he did not dispute the prices of the other items, Farhan said he was shocked by the cost of the prawns.
“The pricing is ridiculous. I was charged RM10 for just seven small pieces of prawns,” he wrote.
He also claimed that when he told the staff he intended to report the matter to the authorities, the cashier allegedly replied, “Go ahead, make the report.”
Farhan further said he planned to hold a press conference to raise the issue publicly, although it remains unclear whether the event ever took place.
Instead of receiving widespread support, the singer faced criticism from many social media users, who argued that seafood has always been one of the more expensive menu items at mamak and nasi kandar restaurants.
One netizen commented that if he felt prawns were too expensive, he simply should not have ordered them.
Another questioned whether Farhan had ever purchased prawns himself and was aware of current market prices, adding that he was only embarrassing himself by making such a complaint.
A third user sarcastically remarked that incidents like this were the reason they avoided befriending people from the B40 income group, sparking further debate in the comments section over food prices and consumer expectations.
