Several areas along the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia experienced tremors today following a moderate earthquake that occurred in northern Sumatra, Indonesia.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said the 5.7-magnitude earthquake was detected at 12.18pm, with the epicentre located at coordinates 4.2° North and 97.6° East.
According to MetMalaysia, the earthquake struck about 55km southwest of Langsa, Indonesia, at a depth of 10km.
The department said the tremors were felt in parts of the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia following the seismic activity.
MetMalaysia has advised members of the public who experienced the shaking to provide feedback by completing its earthquake observation survey.
The information collected will assist authorities in monitoring and analysing the impact of seismic activities affecting the region.
