Wanted Foreign National Arrested At Miri Airport Over Brunei ATM Skimming Case

Date:

A foreign national wanted by authorities in Brunei for allegedly installing ATM skimming devices has been arrested at Miri Airport.

Miri police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the suspect, a man in his 50s, was detained at around 5.30pm on Monday following a joint intelligence-sharing operation between the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the Royal Brunei Police Force (PPDB).

He said the operation was launched after Bruneian authorities alerted Malaysian police to the suspect’s alleged involvement in installing skimming devices on several automated teller machines (ATMs) in the country.

“Swift action through the close cooperation between both police forces led to the suspect’s arrest before he could continue his journey,” Mohd Farhan said in a statement.

The suspect was handed over to the Royal Brunei Police Force on the same day to allow further investigation and legal action under Brunei’s laws.

Mohd Farhan said the successful operation reflects the strong cooperation and ongoing commitment between PDRM and PPDB in tackling cross-border crime, particularly commercial crimes and offences involving the abuse of financial technology.

He also reminded the public to remain vigilant when using ATMs.

Users are advised to inspect ATM machines carefully before making any transactions to ensure there are no suspicious devices attached to the card slot, keypad or other parts of the machine that could be used to steal banking information.

“If you notice any suspicious device or believe an ATM has been tampered with, do not use it. Report the matter immediately to the bank or the police so that appropriate action can be taken,” he said.
