A 22-year-old former college student, who is awaiting the outcome of his application to further his studies at a public university, pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court on Thursday to a charge of raping an 18-year-old female university student last month.
The accused, Mohamad Danish Mohd Suhaimi, entered the plea after the charge was read before Judge Nazlyza Mohamad Nazri.
According to the charge sheet, Mohamad Danish is accused of raping the victim at a house in Kuala Nerus, Terengganu, at about 10.30pm on 6 June.
He was charged under Section 376 of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of up to 20 years’ imprisonment and whipping upon conviction.
Muhamad Nasrul Syahmi Mohd Ariffin of the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK) represented the accused, while the prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Asymawi Ghazali.
The court granted the accused RM7,000 bail with one surety and imposed an additional condition prohibiting him from contacting or interfering with the victim and prosecution witnesses until the conclusion of the trial.
