Fake Social Media Account Case Referred To MCMC, Police For Investigation

Date:

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) have been instructed to investigate allegations involving a fake social media account believed to have uploaded content insulting Prophet Muhammad SAW.

Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said he has yet to receive sufficient information to confirm whether the allegation is true.

“I will check with PDRM and MCMC regarding the status of the matter.

“Normally, when a complaint is lodged, the individual believed to be involved will be called in for investigation to verify the claim,” he said.

Fahmi said MCMC would act as the technical agency by obtaining information from the relevant social media platform and conducting forensic analysis to determine whether a particular device was used to upload the content on the reported date.

He added that he has also requested MCMC to issue a statement regarding the issue.

Fahmi was speaking to reporters after attending the handover ceremony for the Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Bukit Pantai project here today.

The issue surfaced after a post went viral on Threads alleging that a social media account had uploaded content believed to be insulting Prophet Muhammad SAW, sparking anger among members of the public.

However, the social media user linked to the account denied ownership and claimed that another individual had used his name and profile picture to publish the post.

Following the incident, the user lodged a police report and the case was subsequently referred to MCMC for further investigation.
