A vessel that departed from Yanbu, Saudi Arabia, after receiving clearance to sail through the Red Sea is expected to arrive in Melaka in early August, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today.
Anwar said he was informed of the development by Petronas president and group chief executive officer Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz during a briefing yesterday.
He said the successful passage of the vessel highlighted the importance of Malaysia maintaining a careful and balanced foreign policy, particularly amid growing geopolitical tensions affecting global shipping routes.
“This is why our foreign policy must remain prudent,” he said while speaking at a programme held at the Basic Army Training Centre (PUSASDA) today.
The Prime Minister noted that the situation reflects the need for Malaysia to continue safeguarding its national interests while navigating increasingly complex international developments.
The Red Sea has become a high-risk maritime corridor following a series of attacks on commercial vessels by Yemen’s Houthi rebels.
The group has also threatened to disrupt traffic through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a key shipping route connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, raising further concerns over global trade and maritime security amid wider regional tensions.
