Tahfiz Student Charged Over Junior’s Broken Arm After Azan Dispute

A 15-year-old male student from a tahfiz institution was charged at the Magistrate’s Court here today for allegedly causing serious injuries to a junior during an altercation that reportedly began after the victim was criticised for his call to prayer.

The teenager pleaded not guilty after the charge was read before Magistrate Mustaqim Sukarno.

According to the charge, the accused allegedly caused grievous hurt to the 14-year-old victim at the surau of a tahfiz school in Ayer Hitam at about 1pm on June 30.

He was charged under Section 325 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of seven years’ imprisonment and a fine upon conviction.

The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Shazleen Ibrahim, while the accused was represented by lawyer Zurina Sidek.

Based on the case facts, the victim had been assigned to perform the azan before the accused allegedly mocked him by claiming that his recitation was not melodious.

The criticism reportedly sparked an argument, with the victim allegedly slapping the accused before the confrontation escalated into a physical struggle involving pushing between the two students.

The accused allegedly pushed the victim, causing him to fall and suffer a fractured left wrist.

Following the incident, the victim lodged a police report with the assistance of a family member.

The court allowed the accused to be released on RM1,000 bail and fixed Sept 29 for the next case mention, submission of documents and the social report.
